Gatwick Airport Challenge

The challenge for 2010/2011 is not currently running please check back at the end of September.

Racing Baggage Buggies MKII

Anyone who has been to an airport will have seen a variety of vehicles with trailers moving baggage from the aircraft to the terminal and vice versa. These vehicles form a key part of the luggage and freight handling system in an airport and speed and safety of delivery are key factors in keeping travellers happy.

Gatwick Airport is therefore keen to ensure that these vehicles are right for the job and invite students in UK schools to come up with a fun and exciting design for a racing Baggage Buggy that will speed up the transit of luggage.

If you make it to the finals you'll get a chance to put your buggy through its paces on a special Gatwick race track.

The Challenge

Your task is to design and make an environmentally friendly and eco powered model Racing Baggage Buggy capable of towing baggage carts loaded with luggage down a set race track in a straight line. The buggy must race down the track as quickly and as efficiently as possible with its cargo of luggage!

Entry Requirements

The challenge is free to enter and is open to all UK schools. Students may work in teams of up to 4 members from within the same age category. Schools can enter more  than one team.

BAA Airports Context

Typically around 1700 aircrafts take-off daily from UK airports alone, heading to more than 700 world-wide destinations. This makes international airfields the aviation equivalent of the motorway and car park.  Today, all aircraft use their flight engines to power the ground based journey between runway and parking stand and the environmental impact of this is felt by airports across the world in the form of increased noise and fuel use, as well as the unwanted emissions.

BAA Communities Trust

The challenge has been sponsored by the BAA Communities Trust, a charity established ten years ago by BAA.  Since then it has made grants of nearly £4million for projects in the communities local to the company’s seven UK airports, to support charitable initiatives by staff and to national and global projects linked to youth development.
