Operation Earth Quake Rescue – Gosport 05th May 2010

The engineering activity day held at HMS Sultan in Gosport was a resounding success!

The new format for the Royal Navy Challenge proved very exciting for the 50 competing students selected to attend the event. Travelling from all over the UK many arrived the night before to spend an interesting night onboard the Royal Navy ship, HMS Bristol.

On Wednesday the students descended on HMS Sultan not knowing what they would need to  do to complete the two 90 minutes challenges. In all there were 13 teams of approximately 4, with 5 teams made up of students unknown to each other – this oddly enough proved to be of benefit in solving the challenges.

The two challenges must for the moment remain secret as there is a duplicate event in Scotland next month, but one did involve a ‘hospital’ and its power supply and the other a convoy of emergency supplies!
Both challenges required the students to utilise their strengths in both engineering skills and team working in order to complete the design and build tasks. We are pleased to announce that all 13 teams successfully solved both activities with some just managing to squeeze inside the time limits!

In addition to the challenge tasks the Royal Navy had a number of hands on activities for the students to take part in, these included a fantastic new interactive computer system that enables students to complete ‘engineering games’ live on a giant touch screen ‘phone’ and a brilliant series of physics related curiosities involving darkened rooms and strange moving particles. Local companies supported the event through their interactive stands and advice on careers.

The judges for the two challenges were for the main part engineers based within the training establishment, we were delighted to recruit to our cause a civil engineer who works with Red R (an international charity that improves the effectiveness of disaster relief by training relief workers and providing skilled professionals to humanitarian programmes worldwide.) Brian Shorter brought his wealth of experience to the challenges which proved invaluable to both us and the other judges!

It was a fantastic day and students have reported back with great enthusiasm and the schools are already asking when it will be repeated next year as they would like to book early!

The winners of the awards made on the day are:

Olympic Spirit: James Harker, Jasmin Salik, Katie Bird and Jordon Owton
