Frequently Asked Questions
We are receiving so many questions that we believe posting them on here will help others with similar questions. Remember to keep checking back here to see new questions posed by competing teams! The FAQ list will be updated everytime we get a suitable question!
1. The children I’m working with are wondering whether they can use water in their designs?
All Saints (CE) School
Ans: If the water would be used as part of the solution for transmitting the egg across the chasms and cliff climb then unfortunately you would not be able to use water as it is not in the approved list of materials.
2. Would it be possible to register students for Project Eggs Factor if they live outside the UK?
Helen Perry ( Parent from Cyprus)
Ans: Yes we are more than happy to to allow international students to take part, however they are not eligible for the main prizes, however they are still eligible for inclusion on the website and will recieve all the relevant prizes for that!
3. Can metal pieces allowed under the materials section be welded together?
Ryhs James (Home Entry)
Ans: Yes they can be welded together, as long as all the materials used can be found on the approved materials listing.
4. Can I use a catapult in my design?
Rhys James (Home Entry)
Ans: A catapult is a great idea, however you can only use this in one part of the challenge i.e. way point one. You would need to then think of another way of getting from one way point to the next. Remember you will need to design a safe catching system for the egg!5. When sending my video entry for Project Eggs Factor, what format do I need to send it to Young Engineers in?
Church Crookham Junior School
Ans: We have now updated our video formatting system so we should have no problems viewing any entries, whether it was filmed via mobile phone or video recorder. We are able to convert most files, if there is a problem we will always get back to you and ask for it to be resupplied in a suitable format.
6. Dear Young Engineers- I'm afraid I've missed the video deadline! Would you still like me to send you a copy of our entires?
Horsmonden Primary School
Ans: Yes we love to receive your video entries as any that come in after the termly closing date will automatically by placed into next terms Eggs Factor leader board.
7. Can the students make a continuous transport system (ski-lift) that goes from start to finish via the way point?
St Oalves School
Ans: The short answer is no, the egg must be physically moved from the first transport system to the second at the way point, you cannot ski lift to way point 1 then turn it to continue its journey to way point 2.
8. When designing my Project Eggs Factor Crossing and Cliff Climb will be required to include two different transport systems for my eggs?
Rosalind Mitchell (Home Entry)
Ans: The eggs must be transported from the chasm crossing system into the mode of transport for the cliff climb. This doesn’t mean you have to have two different systems, HOWEVER you will need to get the eggs from one transport system to the other, so it might be easier to invent two individual systems and mechanisms to stop any confusion.
9. I was wondering if one transport system can be operated from the start and the second from the finish line? Or do both systems have to be run from one position?
St Olaves School
Ans: You can action any of your systems from any position that suits you, which means the start, middle way point and the finish line, however you cannot stand in the chasm itself! We recommend positioning students at the necessary points prior to starting the eggs journey.
10. Are we allowed to attach the structure at the top of the cliff to the "ground" in any way?
Arbor Preparatory School
Ans: You cannot attach anything to the ground if it falls in between the way points or cliff climb, as theoretically the "ground" wouldn't be there. You can however attach what is needed from the starting position.
11. I noticed that springs and magnets are not on the approved list of materials, can my group use them in there entry for Prroject Eggs Factor?
Whytrig Middle School
Ans:We have no problem with you using springs as they would come under the metal/plastic allowance. However magnets would depend on what type they are, but the majority would at least form part of the allowance of metals/plastics. Ans:
12.Dear Young Engineers- I was reading the instructions for the competion but am not 100% sure what journey the egg is supposed to take. could you please help to clarify the journey.
Nathan Dodd
1. Way Point 1 is higher than the starting point, so the eggs must not only cross a gap but also climb to the top of the rocky outcrop. This can be achieved in one action or two, a) climbing crossing or b) crossing and then a climb to Way Point 1.
2. From Way Point 1 the pair of eggs must travel across the remaining section of the chasm and climb to Way Point 2 which is higher than Way Point 1, again this can be achieved by a crossing climb or a crossing and then climbing.
