What is a Young Engineers Challenge STEM day?

Our STEM Challenge Days are available to both Primary and Secondary school students and form part of our ever expanding range of activities.

Students are placed in groups and set a challenging 'design and make' project.  These improve creative thinking, problem solving and team working and are inspiring and fun for everyone.  STEM Challenges help to build confidence and develop inter-personal skills which can also improve students' performance in class.

Popular and a great addition to school life, these challenges can be designed to form an integral part of the curriculum demonstrating the many and varied links between and within the STEM subjects and the wider curriculum.

To find out what we can offer your school, take a look at either our Primary or Secondary options and get in touch for any further information.

How do I select students for a Challenge Day?

With many challenges available to choose from covering a variety of themes and relating to different areas of the curriculum, Young Engineers challenges are suitable for both a wide range of abilities and age-ranges. We work with a minimum of 20 students to a whole year group in a day.

How long do these challenges last?

The flexible nature of our challenges’ format allows them to be tailored to fit in with your school timetable either over half a day or a full day. We also provide activities to run during specifically themed weeks such as National Science and Engineering Week and Global Entrepreneurship Week.

What will the students do?

Following introductory sessions to introduce engineering, team building and creativity, students will carry out “design and make” activities. We offer a range of projects designed to link to or enhance elements of the Science, Technology and Maths syllabi. As well as providing a menu of popular challenges, we can often tailor challenges to fit in with your current curriculum focus. We always work with you to decide on the most suitable project work for your students. For a description of current STEM Challenge Days, see our Primary or Secondary options.

Are there any other benefits to the day?

To consolidate the learning outcomes, STEM Challenge days conclude by testing each team’s design and an overall discussion of design strengths and ideas for further modifications. Where school policy allows, a winning team is selected based on criteria set during the challenge. The winning team will receive a Young Engineers prize. The school and all participants will receive a certificate to commemorate the day.

What resources do Young Engineers provide?

Young Engineers will provide all resources necessary to complete the projects. In most cases, one Fieldworker will attend a STEM Challenge day. All Young Engineers representatives have undergone a Criminal Records Bureau Check.

What resources must the school provide?

We ask that the school provide the following:
• A room appropriate to the activity and student group
• Data projector and screen (where possible)
• An appropriate number of teachers to supervise students to enable the Fieldworker to concentrate on running the session
We are happy to fit around the rooms and equipment you have available at your school.

How much does it cost?

For more information see our price guide. In addition, schools are also asked to cover the expenses incurred by the Fieldworker. This will include travel to and from your school (40p per mile) plus hotel and food when necessary. A quote can be provided upon request.
