Young Engineer for Britain Terms and Conditions
1. The competition is open to UK resident students in full time school education or equivalent in the following age groups:
Group 3. 12 - 14 Years old (year groups 7, 8 and 9 or equivalent)
Group 2. 14 -16 Years old (year groups 10 and 11 or equivalent)
Group 1. 16 -19 Years old (year groups 12 & 13 or equivalent)
Please note that the competition is not open to primary schools or primary school students.
2. Individuals or teams of up to four can enter. In the latter case, the age of the most senior member will determine the age category in the competition.
3. Entries can only be accepted from residents of the United Kingdom. Schools may enter as many projects as they wish. Individual students may enter a maximum of two projects.
4. Projects can be based on any branch of engineering or technology, (Mechanical, Electronic, Robotic, Electrical, Computing, Civil/Structural, Design, ICT, CADCAM, product design, food tech, textiles, etc).
5. A-level and GCSE course work (or equivalent) can be entered. General school or home projects are also eligible.
6. The competition aims to encourage and reward creative, innovative and unique marketable projects.
7. Projects must identify a need or opportunity and provide an engineering solution to meet that need.
8. Projects must have commercial or marketable viability.
9. Working in industry type projects such as Year in Industry and the Engineering Education Scheme are not eligible to enter. These projects cannot be fairly judged against student coursework where the level of corporate involvement is considerably lower.
10. Projects developed under ‘company challenge’ type activities, e.g. F1 in Schools, Toyota Technology Challenge, Shell ECO Marathon, Gravity Racers, Greenpower, Young Engineers own challenges etc are not eligible to enter due to the prescriptive nature of their criteria.
11. Projects must have been developed within the last two academic years and repeat entry is only permitted if there has been significant development from the previous entry.
12. Projects must be capable of being practically demonstrated at a Regional Final and be more than a concept.
13. Projects must be displayed using the display and header boards provided.
14. The student(s) involved must attend the Regional Final with their project. The students must ensure that at all times their behaviour and conduct is befitting the event and in no way causes distress or harm to Young Engineers, the sponsors of the event or other competitors.
15. Entrants will be required to participate at the Regional Final within their government region, although latitude will be allowed in circumstances where the entrant is unable to attend due to date clashes etc.
16. Students may seek assistance, support or sponsorship for their project from industry or their local Science and Engineering Ambassador etc.
17. Entrants should seek advice to protect their copyright and intellectual property rights; YEng can take no responsibility for infringements once projects have entered the public domain at judging events.
18. YEng can take no responsibility for loss or damage to projects, howsoever caused.
19. The decision of the awards panel is final and binding.
20. The organisers reserve the right to publicise entries at their discretion, but will make full acknowledgement to the entrant and their school or college. Similarly it is expected that contestants, who are approached by the media, will make full acknowledgement to YEng as organisers of the competition. YEng reserves the right to use any quotes, photos or statements of the students or accompanying adults participating in the competition in their publicity materials or press releases etc.
21. The organisers reserve the right to change the date of events and the prizes, but will notify contestants at the earliest opportunity should this be necessary.
